Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) are responsible for performing basic health care duties in hospitals, nursing homes and various care facilities. However, the law requires that all CNAs be registered and certified before being allowed to work in a professional environment. The state of Hawaii is no exception. Certified nurse assistants are required to undergo rigorous training before being registered by the state regulatory body.

Admission Requirements

Different programs have different admission requirements, but state and federal law does set a standard for aspiring CNAs. Listed below are two basic requirements CNA applicants need to meet:

  • High School Diploma or Accepted Equivalent – Applicants are required to have at least passed their General Education Development (GED) tests.
  • At least 16–18 years old – Depending on the requirements of the program, CNA applicants need to be at least 16 or 18 years old.

Tuition & Fees

CNA costs vary from school to school, but it usually ranges from $500 to $1,300 for the standard 8-week course. This normally includes the actual tuition, course supplies and professional liability insurance. Other expenses include any additional examination fees, uniforms and lodging expenses (if lodging is required). Bear in mind additional expenses can be incurred should a student take certain aspects of the course again due to incomplete requirements.

Course Duration

The standard course length for CNA Programs in Hawaii lasts 8 weeks. 6 weeks (24 days) are dedicated to fulfilling the required 100 hours of classroom instruction wherein students are obligated to attend lectures and classes on various nursing theories, techniques and practices. Traditional course work includes study of human anatomy, terminology patient rights, medical ethics, medical terminology, diseases and proper patient care.

The remaining 2 weeks (8 days) of the course is allotted for clinical instruction wherein students will undergo the required 50 hours of hands-on training. CNA courses allow for little to no absences, especially in the clinical instruction phase of the program. Any absences may result in dismissal from the program itself.
